Titanium posts are implanted into the bone of the jaw, then crowned with a tooth made to match the patient’s existing teeth. The results are both beautiful and long lasting since the post becomes integrated with bone, just like the root of a real tooth.
If you are missing a single tooth or have a decayed tooth, you're certainly a candidate for this procedure. Other factors include having healthy gums free of periodontal disease, being old enough that the jaw has stopped growing and you should also have enough bone to support and anchor the implant. If you don’t have enough bone, a graft can be done or, an implant might be recommended to prevent further bone loss. Smoking or alcoholism are risk factors for an adverse outcome.
The dental implant process requires about six to eight months from your initial appointment to achieve a full and beautiful smile. The implants are anchored in either the upper or lower jaw and then require three to six months to heal. With the help of a custom mold of your mouth, replacement teeth will be made and affixed to the implants after they have healed. Most patients recover well from the surgical procedure and experience very little to no down time from their regular activities.
